Forest in the City. Mind the Gap
Five years. Is it long? As for cheese, I think it's a pretty good ageing time. As for a child, especially if he is yours, it is also more than enough. But if it is a matter of your car – five years is not a reason to give a big discount that chap when you sell your baby. If you have been studying at the university for five years it seems like you've been studying there for ages. Freshmen will say you have one foot in the grave and the other one on a banana peel.
They say a man is as old as he feels, and a woman is as old as she looks. This is obviously a very optimistic and upbeat approach to ageing. But once it comes to relationships, the issue stops being so clear.
In a traditional couple a man is older than a woman. This is a normal situation in our society and we feel comfortable with it. Psychologists say it all has to do with the way we grew up. Girls become mature five years earlier than boys. But if you listened to psychologists more attentively, you'd know that at a certain point this difference vanishes, and boys and girls find themselves at almost the same level of intellectual and physical development. Thus you cannot say that an age gap between a young man and a young woman is so crucial.
Well, we are totally okay when a man and a woman are of the same age. And we are being very tolerant when a young woman is in a relationship with an old fart. But what if the opposite happens? A younger man and an older woman.
Dali and Gala, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher had courage to have this May-December romance despite all rumors, prejudice and possible pitfalls. Statistics show that the number of such couples has increased recently. What has changed in the society that women got so interested in young men and men came to prefer women of a certain age?
First of all, women have become so self-reliant and independent, that they just don't see a man as a breadwinner or a head of the family. Thus, such qualities as reliability, experience or wisdom are no longer essential or crucial. The reason why a successful woman takes a young lover is obvious: she just wants to prove she is still young, sexy, and attractive. It is the same reason why a man chases after young girls.
But the biggest mystery is why young guys would suddenly prefer mature women to innocent, naïve young ladies. Older women are more confident. And this is a big advantage for guys tired of endless inferiority complexes and doubts of their young girlfriends. The older a woman the more experienced she is. She is a real gift to a guy who wants some advice, support, delicious dinner, and a high quality blow job. To cut a long story short, women are like wine, they only get better with age. Men used to make wine themselves, starting with growing grapes. It's a pity nowadays they don't even bother to uncork the bottle.
On the one hand, an age gap can break your relationships if you are led by egocentrism or pursuit of pleasure. On the other hand, when it comes to love, age is just a number.
