Volunteering means using some of your time to work for the benefit of a community without expecting anything in return. It can be in your home city, your country, or overseas. Volunteering could mean anything from working with children who live in orphanages, assisting in an animal hospital, or cleaning up a national park. Volunteers can be anyone, from children to the elderly, from students to full-time workers. In some countries, volunteer organizations provide services that the government is unwilling or unable to provide.
When Ukraine hosted the 2012 Euro Football Cup, thousands of Ukrainians volunteered in different capacities. Some offered translation and city tours. Others hosted foreign football fans in their homes. Still thousands more volunteered at the matches to help people find their seats and assist anyone who needed help.
Since volunteers aren’t paid for their service, why do people give their time for free? Some people volunteer out of a simple desire to give back while others have free time and want to do something worthwhile. Many mention the opportunity to meet new people, make new friends, or even find a life partner through volunteering. Polls have shown that volunteering actually reduces stress, improves health and physical fitness, and generally makes people happier.
So many volunteer organizations need extra hands. And it really is easy to do. Life is much more satisfying when you help improve the lives of others while also improving your own life.

“The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. Don’t wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make some good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope.” Barack Obama
